Instructions for Preparing the Sea Grant Project Summary Form (90-2)

For a printer friendly version of these instructions, click here.

The project summary form is intended to present a concise description of the funded activity in a form useful to a variety of readers who do not necessarily require detailed information. This form is not a substitute for a proposal, but should permit judgments as to whether the proposals merit reading for a particular purpose.

NOTE: Information contained on the project summary form will be inputted to National Sea Grant data files, which are programmed to recover, on request, project summaries in this format. This format also will be used for hard copy submission of revised proposals and will be adopted for other uses previously served by NOAA FORM 90-2. The project summary form should contain the following information:

INSTITUTION: Enter N.H. Sea Grant.

ICODE: Enter 3300.

TITLE: Project titles should be carefully constructed to give as much information about the project as possible in not more than two lines (about 16 words). There will be people (perhaps influential) who will judge the content of a program from scanning a list of titles or titles plus funding numbers.

PROJECT NUMBER: Leave blank.

PROJECT STATUS: NEW or CONTINUING.

REVISION DATE: Leave blank.

INITIATION DATE: The date on which Sea Grant support for the project was initiated or is to be initiated.

COMPLETION DATE: The date on which it is estimated that the project will be completed.

SUB PROGRAM: Leave blank.

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: PI's name, last name first (Smith, John).

EFFORT: Number of months that the PI will devote to the project in the grant year covered, expressed as 2 mo., 3 mo., etc.

AFFILIATION: The institutional affiliation of PI(s) - e.g., UNH Electrical Engineering.

AFFILIATION CODE: Leave blank.

ASSOCIATE INVESTIGATOR: If applicable, provide same information as with principal investigator.

EFFORT: Number of months that the associate investigator will devote to the project in the grant year covered, expressed as 2 mo., 3 mo., etc.

AFFILIATION: The institutional affiliation of PI(s) - e.g., UNH Zoology.

AFFILIATION CODE: Leave blank.

SEA GRANT FUNDS: For a new or continuing project, this entry contains the amount of funds requested for the coming year.

LAST YEAR'S SEA GRANT FUNDS: The grant funds committed to the project for the grant year prior to the one for which the summary is prepared. If it is a new project, enter zero unless some program development funds were committed to it.

PASS-THROUGH FUNDS: The grant funds (if any) committed to the project for this funding period from federal agencies other than Sea Grant (e.g., funds from the Navy, EPA, NMFS, etc.).

STATE MATCHING FUNDS and LAST YEAR'S MATCHING FUNDS: The non-federal funds committed to the project.

LAST YEAR'S PASS THROUGH FUNDS: The grant funds (if any) committed to this project last year from funding agencies other than Sea Grant.

RELATED PROJECTS: The project number(s) of other project(s) begun (or completed) to which this project is related. The intent is to build a record of continuity. For example, the project may be to establish economic feasibility of a scheme and be a follow-up to a project that established the technical feasibility.

PARENT PROJECTS: The project number(s) of the past project(s) from which this project was directly derived.

SEA GRANT STRATEGIC PLAN CLASSIFICATION: Leave blank.

OBJECTIVES: This section should tell what the investigator(s) will undertake to do. The objectives should be stated in such a way that at a later date it can be determined if they were accomplished.

The heading "Objectives" should be interpreted as "The objectives of this task are:" What follows (in no more than 10 lines of type) should begin with the word "to" followed by a verb(e.g., To determine the...).

In keeping with Sea Grant's mission, the most appropriate verbs are: develop, provide, determine, isolate, characterize, identify, restore and implement. Less desirable but sometimes appropriate verbs are: promote, conduct, analyze, apply, investigate, examine and describe. Some verbs, such as study, consider and continue, should not be used since failure to do these is not determinable.

METHODOLOGY: This is an optional section of no more than six lines to indicate the methodology or show sub-objectives that indicate the approach to be taken.

RATIONALE: This section should be a concise statement (no more than six lines) of why this is an appropriate Sea Grant project; that is, what problem or opportunity is being addressed. The project need not promise to fully solve the problem, but it should be shown that it is a logical step towards a solution. Long involved background statements should be avoided. If possible, identify the potential users of the information to be developed.
