Abstract

Communications is a vital component of the Sea Grant network. As an organization, we are committed to fostering the wise use, conservation and development of the nation's coastal resources. One of the ways we do this is by generating bias-free information products and disseminating them to all those with a stake in our mission. And while not all these stakeholders exhibit the same degree of appreciation and interest, we operate with the conviction that every U.S. resident is a stakeholder.

Objectives

To provide communications support and advice to NH Sea Grant administrators, researchers and extension personnel.

To disseminate information resulting from NH Sea Grant research and extension activities and accomplishments to the scientific community, elected and appointed government officials, marine industries, students and teachers, and the general public.

To work with other Sea Grant programs and appropriate organizations to conceive, produce, market and evaluate regional and national communications products.

To promote public awareness of marine and coastal issues in northern New England and the Gulf of Maine region.

To increase recognition of Sea Grant in the scientific community, in the marine industries, by elected and appointed government officials, by students and teachers, and by the general public.

To promote greater scientific literacy throughout the sectors served by Sea Grant, including legislators, students, teachers, the media, tourists and the general public.

To keep abreast of changing communications technologies and strategies in order to use the most efficient and cost-effective communications means possible.

Rationale

Through its active and ongoing communications and information program, the staff disseminates information about Sea Grant activities to increase public awareness of northern New England's marine resources and to promote their wise use.
